A Brief History of Hair Removal Techniques

A Brief History of Hair Removal Techniques

Hair removal has been a part of human culture since ancient times. While hair has served its purpose in protecting against ultraviolet rays and regulating temperature, humans have long desired to remove excess hair. Techniques such as razors and depilatories have been used for centuries. In ancient Egypt, men shaved their heads and beards not for vanity, but for survival during combat. In the Roman world, a clean-shaven look represented civilization and progress.

In the United States, the trend of hair removal was sparked nearly a century ago when an advertisement campaign depicted underarm hair as unhygienic and unfeminine. This led to a surge in hair removal techniques beyond razors and depilatories. In 1916, electrolysis was invented, followed by Nair, the most effective depilatory cream to date in the 1940s.

Laser hair removal devices were first developed in the 1970s, but they were ineffective and painful, limiting their use. In 1995, the US Food and Drug Administration approved neodymium yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) as the first laser for hair removal. Soon after, the first article on laser hair removal was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Since then, dozens of different brands of hair removal lasers/lights have become available using several different wavelengths to induce reduction.
